Review – Hybrid Man – Overgrown Echos (On Rotation)

On Rotation continue their output of quality releases with an EP – Overgrown Echoes – from Australian live hardware-based duo Hybrid Man.

Hybrid Man - Overgrown Echos [ONRO05] - On Rotation

The tracks combine trance-influenced pads and melodies (and a lovely retro-sounding vocal sample in B1) with elements of techno and deep, groovy basslines, and a nod to house. There’s a lovely sound that my pals and I often refer to a ‘swampy’ – an acid-tinged sound with subtle layers of percussive intricacies that bring nature to mind, and that’s a strong element here in all four tunes.

Like all the releases on this label, there’s a lot of intricate pieces here making up the whole; layers of music and subtle details that create a large soundscape. You could listen to these many times and pick out new elements, but also they’re all highly danceable too. The B sides would work beautifully early doors as produced, but also sped up slightly would work as peak time tunes. The vocal I referred to earlier was made to be heard off your chops on a dancefloor at 3AM. Beyond that, I’m looking forward to hearing these on a big system, with all their grooves and subtleties.

Incoming soon…This is released on December 8th.
